It’s that time of the week!

As my title gives away, it is indeed that time of the week when I sit down at my computer and attempt to get my creative juices flowing. Usually at this point, in act of pure desperation to be mildly interesting, I recollect on all the fun and exciting thoughts I’ve had for my blog over the past week … and this week is no different. My initial plans were stunning really. I was going to take the hit song “What Do Tigers Dream Of” and tweak the words to be fitting for WLC. However, much to my chagrin, I failed. 2 lines and all my productivity came to a screeching halt. Here’s what I had:

“What do Warriors dream of when they take lil’ Warrior snooze? Do they dream of going to class, or hanging out in our awesome dorm* rooms?”

That’s pretty classic huh? I feel like I really had a hit on my hands. I mean it’s been stuck in my head for days! But I digress.

It’s time I’ll tell you something somewhat informative … It is WLC’s spring break next week which is very exciting. Since winter has been dragggging on and homework is piling up to my eyeballs, it could not have come at a better time. Bringing me to my final point: A bit of WLC Warrior Wisdom -> Don’t procrastinate!

-Andy

*Footnote: We do not actually call living areas here at WLC “dorms” because that implies they are simply just for sleeping, which they are not). They are for so much more. WLC residence halls (that’s their official name) have so much space for activities compared to dorms. Now that that is all cleared up! Good bye

Mmmmm…weekends…

It is the end of February. This means that taxes and the FAFSA are due soon. Even though, my taxes are due until April, the FAFSA is due March 1 and, well, you kind of need that information. That being said, I thought “all” I would have to do this weekend is study up for mid-terms for Small Group Com and Theology, but a good majority of my time will be doing some number crunching. Thank you Turbo Tax! Also this weekend, I have to organize the literature that the choir and college are taking along with for the choir tour that starts on March 5. We are taking a 10-day tour that includes stops to Cincinnati, Atlanta and Washington D.C., to name a few.

As you may know from reading last week’s blog, I had some really large projects due. I am happy to say that I was extremely pleased with the results of both. This is probably the first time this semester where I was utterly relieved that those were done. There was a rumor out there that the professors were trying to be nice and make some things due the week before Spring Break. I’m thinking this is actually true, but I just had all the professors that actually did that! :-)

I also got a lot of feedback on the like poem I threw together in response to Andy’s “last good idea.” I can’t say that I can think of one right now, but we’ll try to get another poem going at some point in the March–that I can promise.

Now we’ll move on to the Wisconsin Lutheran College Sports Corner Update. The women’s basketball team was able to pull out a 15-point victory over Rockford in the first round of the NAC Tournament. They take on the third seeded Lakeland Muskies tonight in the REX at 7 pm for a berth in the championship game on Saturday. The men’s and women’s track & field teams have been in action the last two weekends as well. There were two participants that were able to break WLC records. Congratulations goes out to sophomore Katie Schommer and freshman Josh Stodola. Also, two PACers are participating for the track & field teams, Alex and Cecilee. We wish them luck this season!

I hope everyone has a great weekend and I’m off to trim up my shaggy mop that is called my hair.

Until next time, “you stay classy.”

Is it March yet?

Since it is the middle of February (which everyone knows is by far the lamest month of the year; unless your birthday happens to be in February, then it’s awesome), I’m having trouble thinking of things to blog about. This especially becomes apparent if you check my last few blogs, which although adding variety and fun, lack a little bit of substance. My first instinct was to just take Mike or Rachel’s blog, copy and paste it, and call it my own. However, my English professor (for reasons I’ll never understand) said that this is called plagiarism and is illegal/strongly frowned upon. You may have my blog where I tried my hand at rhyming and poetry, but Mike thoroughly and more entertainingly outdid me on that one (and that was my last good idea). Although, I did just think of something exciting to talk about!

On every floor of the residence halls here at WLC, there are vending machines that are filled weekly and are essential for the survival of most students here who desire late night snacks. This week they stocked it with Grandma’s Peanut Butter Cookies. It was probably the one of the best nights of my life. Having now revealed that sad insight into my life and what truly makes me happy, I’ll leave you on that note.

Have fun, be safe.

I apologize that I used “eggnog” in my blog

So, contrary to belief, I have not disappeared from the college. The men’s basketball schedule got a little crazy and other circumstances (thank you, car) and I realized I hadn’t blog for a couple of weeks. My bad.

This leads me into the Wisconsin Lutheran College Sports Corner Update. The men’s and women’s basketball teams finished up their regular-season schedules. One of the teams is advancing to the NAC Tournament. The other, unfortunately, lost five in a row until the NAC Challenge game. The women’s team is the second seed in the NAC Tournament and will be playing Rockford at home on Wednesday here at the REX. They are fresh off of their NAC Challenge game victory over the first seed Concordia-Wisconsin, 52-49. The men’s team finished up the conference regular season with a 7-9 record and a victory in the NAC Challenge game against Maranatha, 92-81.

The spring sports will be starting up real soon and we will highlight their seasons in the upcoming blogs.

This week could be my busiest of the year. I have a 30-minute presentation on Thursday, a 10-12 page paper due on Friday, along with a history exam. The good news is that my semester after Spring Break should be, I don’t want to say “easy,” because, let’s face it, college isn’t “easy,” but more relaxing. A lot of the projects will be done and then it’s just the exams you have to study up for.

On a fun note, Andy took my recommendation and spiced up his blog a little bit. He did a nice job with it. (The last one had some good alliteration as well in the title as well.) However, his title, “What rhymes with blog?” got me thinking about that. So, here’s my best take on it.

One day I was sitting on a log trying to think about a subject for my blog. My mind was in a fog, but it literally was because I was sitting near a cranberry bog.  So I turned and asked Shadow, he’s my dog, what I should write about in my blog. Of course, because he is a dog, all he can think about it food, so he said, “Eggnog.” I don’t like eggnog, so I let my blog sit and went for a jog.

That little exercise was done to just show everyone that we do try to have a little fun around here, even if it is as simple as trying to find every word that rhymes with “blog” of the top of my head.

Until next time, “you stay classy.”

What lovely weather!

Hello Everyone!

I hope you all had a great week! The weather this week was pretty nice. I hope it stays that way because then I don’t have to wear my winter jacket. Plus, having warm weather keeps me awake because the sun is shinning and you can actually do more things outside like homework.

This week at school I had three tests at the end of the week. I pretty much studied more than anything. I also got a head start on a presentation for my communication class that is due March 2.

Only 13 more days till our choir tour! I am very excited and anxious. There will be a lot of singing but I do not mind one bit. I am also ready for the break of the Wisconsin weather but you all knew that already.

I cannot think of anything to exciting for me that is going on next week. I will just be studying hard as usual and enjoying hanging out with friends at WLC.

Have a great week!

Rachel :)

Cheesecake, Challenges & Clue

It seems to me that about 99.4% of people like cheesecake. I, however, am not one of those people … Although if you are one of the many who do, last night was serving it up from the Cheesecake Factory in the Warrior Underground last night. I didn’t go (because I’m guilty of the crime of having bad taste), but I heard it was amazingly delicious!

However, besides having good eats, there is more good news on campus here. Team Effect took first place here at Wisconsin Lutheran College in the Kapco Charitable Challenge. However, all the teams did a fantastic job spending great amounts of time and energy to help others. As a result, Team Effect is moving on to the second round of the challenge where they will be doing a different sort of charitable work. Good luck to them!

The other news I have about on campus events was about the night at the museum we had on Friday. It was very fun playing clue in an actual museum. We had to run around from character to character trying to figure out who committed a crime with what and where. The team I was on won the first round of five. We won gift cards to either Starbucks or Speedway! It was fantastic.

Busy, Busy, Busy!

Hey Everyone!

I hope you all had a great week! I feel like this week flew by, which is really good! I have been staying pretty busy this semester so far. I have been studying most of the time and then hanging out with friends. I had two tests this week and I passed them! I got sick last weekend and lost my voice. I sounded like a man for a week. My friends and classmates had fun teasing me, but it’s all good because I made fun of myself too!

This week in choir we are getting ready for our concert on Sunday, February 14, 2010, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Grafton, WI. It is about 45 minutes away from the campus. It should be a great concert. Today’s rehearsal went very well and Dr. Nowack was very pleased. This concert is a little preview of what we are doing for our East Coast Tour, which is March 5-14. It will be a very busy but fun tour.

Andy already talked about how we had bingo last night on campus. Tonight W.E.B. (Warrior Events Board) is putting on a Mystery Night at the Museum. I was told it’ll be like the game Clue. I will be going to it tonight and I am very excited because it is something different to do and we will have prizes of course!

I hope you all have a great weekend!

Rachel :)

What rhymes with blog??

So as of late, Mike (yup, you’re in here again bud) has told me my blogs lack some… variety. So I thought maybe I should try to blog in poetic form. After countless hours of brainstorming, it turns out that I am by no means Shakespeare so here goes my standard blog (sorry for the disappointment).

I’m sure all of you know that feeling that always hits around February. The feeling that winter has been dragging on forever, but spring still seems miles away because 10 inches of snow just randomly gets dumped on you. That’s what I’m feeling right now. I just want it to hurry up and be March or April… Honestly, who doesn’t love Spring?

Last night was bingo night here at Wisconsin Lutheran College, and I gotta say, there is no game quite so frustrating. Although, somewhat miraculously, the table right next to ours had approximately 5 bingos and won a Wii (as well as some wheat thins).

Thanks for reading everyone. Shout out to Team Effect. Take a look on facebook! (There’s my rhyme, let’s see Shakespeare do better than that!)

I stay focused on classes with snow on the ground

So anyone who thought that Wisconsin’s winter was done and over, you had wishful thinking. There is snow once again on the ground. I’m not complaining, but some people thought we were home free. We ALWAYS have a huge snow storm in March, too.

Winterfest was a bunch of fun. I’ll touch on the basketball games later, but the dinner and dance were awesome. Kudos to all the WEB members that put the event together and made it happened. That’s one thing the WEB organization doesn’t hear enough about: how well its events actually go. Again, way to go!

And that takes me right into my Wisconsin Lutheran College Sports Corner Update. The men’s and women’s basketball teams were in action on Saturday for Winterfest and an additional game this week. The women had a thrilling game on Saturday against Lakeland, but couldn’t make the last second shot in OT and lost by one point. The men, however, were able to pull out the W in the second game in convincing fashion, 90-71. Both teams were back in action later in the week, as the men played on Tuesday and the women on Wednesday. Both teams pick up Ws, as the men’s team dominated Dominican, 82-68, and the women’s team picked up a road victory at Concordia-Chicago, 51-44.

Currently, the women’s team stands on top of the NAC South Division with a 10-4 record. The men’s team is in a virtual tie with Concordia-Chicago (8-4) (who they beat earlier this year) at 7-4. Both teams will be back in action this Saturday at Marian University in Fond du Lac, Wis.

As Andy said in his blog, (and a link back for you there, Andy) there is quite a buzz on campus about the Charitable Challenge, along with the other campus activities that will be coming up (like a Super Bowl party, for example). Also, students have began to get “settle” into their classes a little bit more and have now are starting on their big projects (like a 30 minute presentation or 10 page research paper), but overall, spirits are high for the beginning of February.

Until next time, “you stay classy.”

I wish Mike would help me think of a title

Sharing Mike’s (fellow PAC-er and blog title extraordinaire) sentiment concerning the fact that this feels like week 8 of the semester rather than week 3, these couple weeks have been rough.

This semester I started calculus, which is apparently tied in with algebra, and I haven’t taken that since sophomore year of high school. Needless to say, it is a very challenging part of my semester. It also adds insult to injury that I have it four times a week. However, the good news is, once I finish this class I’m done with math forever (hopefully) :)

One exciting thing on campus that there has been a lot of buzz about is something called the “Charitable Challenge.” It’s a challenge given out to 15 teams of students belonging to three different colleges in the area. Their goal is to take $1,000 and over the course of 3 weeks, use it to benefit a cause of their choice.

My sister and my boss (as well as some of my co-workers) from Peer Admissions Counselors are currently on a team called “Team Effect,” and their whole team are doing an awesome job. Here’s a link to their team’s Facebook page so you can see what they’re all about!

I hope Mike (that’s a different link) enjoys my shout-out in this blog, and I hope all you have awesome week!
