Visitors to the Wisconsin Lutheran College campus may not have noticed the addition to the roof of the Marvin M. Schwan Library. Renewable Energy Solutions started installing 60 solar panels when the snow was still flying, and the panels began producing energy this spring.

But this week, with the addition of a kiosk in the library, people can learn about the solar panels and track the amount of energy being produced on campus. The information also can be viewed online through We Energies.

President Daniel W. On behalf of the college, Dr. Johnson accepted a grant from Focus on Energy for $35,080 to offset the cost of the system.

The garden, located on the Wisconsin Avenue side of campus, catches runoff water from the upper portion of campus.

With storms in the forecast this week, the plot of native perennials should help divert some rainwater from the storm sewers.

Tonight Koiné gave a family-oriented concert on Wisconsin Lutheran College’s Quad.

The free event drew a crowd of families, alumni, students, and friends to WLC on a beautiful night.

Children were invited on stage to help with several songs.

Koiné has two WLC alumni: Brian Davison (below) and Seth Bauer.

Joanna Balza, a 2005 graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran College, is a great example of servant leadership in action. As a Peace Corps volunteer, she helped coordinate the trip of a lifetime for 50 students in South Africa this week.

Balza and fellow Peace Corps volunteer Haley McDonough took the students on bus ride to see a U.S. men’s national soccer team practice in Pretoria West as the team prepared for World Cup competition.

Balza said, “It was really exciting for [the students] to meet the players; but for most of these kids, just getting to go on a bus to Pretoria and be given lunch is a huge deal.”

The Appleton, Wisconsin, native is the sister of WLC professor Dr. Robert Balza.

Saturday’s ceremony begins at 1 p.m. in Wisconsin Lutheran College’s Recreation Complex.

The soon-to-be graduates did a walk-through of the ceremony, and the band and choir rehearsed.

Reading a seating chart may be the last test some students ever have to pass.

Doors open tomorrow at noon, and the forecast is for a beautiful day!

Pastor Joel Pless spoke on “Fond Farewells to the People of God.” The service also featured special guest musicians David and Judy Kriewall of Issaquah, Washington.

They performed the preservice music, J.S. Bach’s Overture (Suite) #2 C.P.E. Bach Hamburger Sonata, on flute and harpsichord.

Next fall a revised chapel schedule will begin. On Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, chapel will move to 10 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday services will remain at 11 a.m.

The Impact Award finalists (pictured left to right) were Sara Boldt, Lindsay Hintz, Joel Schwartz, Jonathan Fricke, and Benjamin Ziesemer.

Senior Joel Schwartz, a business administration major from Yakima, Washington, is the 18th recipient of the college’s Impact Award. Joel has served the college with his musical talents as a member of the Wisconsin Lutheran Choir and Revelation. He frequently plays the pipe organ for chapel services and for neighboring congregations. Joel has served as a resident assistant for two years. He also was a member of Project Ripples in the 2010 Kapco Charitable Challenge.

Schwartz directed 150 students at the college's 2009 Christmas service during a moving performance of Hark! The Herald Angles Sing.

Topics included coral reefs in Grenada, character education in the mathematics classroom, phosphorus availability to wheat from various biosolids, and the structure and function of the human body.

Lydia Krause presented on "Visualizing Gene Expression Patterns in Zebrafish."

Joseph Hockenberry discussed "The Derivation of Cardiac Myocytes from Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells."

Ana Stern and Danielle Ashman presented their findings on "Water Quality of the Menomonee River Based on the Collection of Macroinvertebrates and their Family-level Biotic Index."

Dr. David Schulz gave the keynote address following the student presentations. He spoke about writing Arabic names in English and English names in Arabic.
