I left my heart at Cranbrook

And I thought it couldn’t get any better than yesterday! Today we started off right with pancakes and guava-pineapple juice. Then we had a lecture on the Rocky Shore environment. My group had to measure a little tide pool that was not teeming with life. We mostly had Bleeding Tooth Nerites (snails) and Knobby Prickly [...]

Simply amazing day!

Today was amazing. That is the easiest way to say it and yet such an understatement. This morning we went to Runaway Bay – named for the area where all the runaway slaves went after the British freed them from the Spanish (see history on this microsite for the background information). We were dropped off [...]

Night snorkeling

So it may be kind of creepy to enter into dark water where you can’t see the bottom much less ten feet in front of your face, and you never know if a barracuda or the ominous diadema is under you… no worries that itty bitty flash light will save you. Yeah right. Jen (McTavish) [...]

Diving at Pear Tree (and 6:30 am is really early!)

Hi everyone!
Well, as people around the world anticipate the coming of the New Year, we in Jamaica are blessed with the privilege of enjoying gorgeous weather and beautiful views (both in and above the water…and from our lanai that looks out on the water). While we’ve gotten up extremely early for the past two days [...]

Beware of the Diadema, everyone says it but does everyone listen? Not me. Just stab your leg into those six inch spines and see what happens, or better yet, I’ll tell you. First you pull out the ones you can, then you watch it bleed, then you clean it and apply [...]

Early mornings…

Hello all,
This morning we got up bright and early to do a 6:30 a.m. snorkel in Pear Tree Bottom. We were dropped off by boat in about 40-60 feet of water and we could see strait to the bottom. It was amazing. We are doing that again tomorrow, so I’ll write more about it then [...]

Sea Cucumbers and Corals and Baracudas, oh my!

Today we started snorkeling and all I have to say is wow. I had no idea how alive the ocean was. I mean, I knew that there were fish and all sorts of creatures, but to see them up close and personal was amazing. After having a short safety lecture by our dive master, Anthony [...]

We made it safe and sound!

Hello once again,
It is I, your weary traveler, here to write to you about today’s journey into the beautiful island of Jamaica. After waking up at 3:45 a.m. central time, standing in lots of lines, landing in Memphis, landing in Jamaica, standing in more long lines and carrying luggage (I’m so glad I packed light), [...]

Pre-Trip

Hi, this is the first blog that I, Jennifer McTavish, have ever written. Can you believe that? None of my friends nor family are allowed to answer that question. I know, you are all thinking “silly professors let a Communicative Arts major on the Jamaica trip,” but without me going on this trip, there might [...]
